Drawing the Line

April 10, 2026 · Where language ends and abstraction begins
PARTICIPANTS
Tariq Al Suwaidi, Sara Haidari

Tariq Al Suwaidi began by writing a single word on a large sheet of paper, then asked the room to watch as he kept rewriting it, faster each time, until the word disappeared into pure gesture. It was the clearest possible demonstration of the question at the centre of his practice: at what point does calligraphy stop being writing?

Sara Haidari, a scholar of classical Kufic script, offered historical counterpoints all evening — reminding the room that abstraction in Arabic calligraphy is not a contemporary invention so much as a return. The salon closed, fittingly, in near silence, with guests passing the sheet of paper hand to hand.

“A letter stops being a letter the moment you stop needing to read it.”
— Tariq Al Suwaidi
